Who is William Zabka?
William Zabka is an American actor best known for his role as Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid (1984), The Karate Kid Part II (1986), and the Cobra Kai (2018-present) TV series. He was also nominated for an Academy Award as a co-writer and producer of the short film Most.
He got his breakout role in his film debut as main antagonist Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid. He had no prior training in karate at the time but was an accomplished wrestler in high school. His experience in the film would inspire him to study Tang Soo Do, earning a second degree green belt.
He would then appear in movies like Just One of the Guys (1985), National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985), Back to School (1986), as well as the CBS television series The Equalizer (1986-89). Eventually, he grew weary of being typecast as a school bully, mentioning in an interview that he would sometimes get harassed in public when he gets recognized as one of his characters in his films, especially Johnny Lawrence.
Zabka would act mostly in independent films while continuing his filmmaking studies in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2003, he wrote and produced the short film Most, which was shot in Poland and the Czech Republic. It premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and won many awards at prestigious film festivals. He also got an Academy Award nomination for the Live Action Short Film category.
He recently reprised his role as the adult version of Johnny Lawrence for the YouTube Premium series Cobra Kai, wherein he also serves as co-executive producer with The Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio.
