Stephen Dorff is an American actor best known for playing the characters Roland West in the third season of HBO crime drama anthology True Detective, PK in The Power of One, Stuart Sutcliffe in Backbeat, Johnny Marco in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, and Glen in The Gate. He’s also known for performances in Cecil B. DeMented, The Motel Life, S.F.W., Space Truckers, and in Blade as Deacon Frost.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia to Nancy and Steve Dorff, performance was in Stephen’s blood. His father had been a composer and music producer, so he grew up being influenced by music and performance. His brother Andrew would become a country music songwriter, while he started as a child actor, appearing in commercials for Kraft and Mattel. However, he was a troubled youth, attending several private schools and being expelled from five of them.
He started acting in the late 80s, landing minor roles in shows like Diff’rent Strokes, Blossom, Roseanne, and Married… with Children. He auditioned for the part of “PK” in The Power of One, and he won the role against over 2000 young aspiring actors. He got to star opposite Morgan Freeman, John Gielgud, and Fay Masterson, and his performance earned him the Male Star of Tomorrow Award from the National Association of Theater Owners.
