The Lowdown on Richard Ayoade

The man of 2021 - Richard Ayoade is everywhere!

Hitting our screens as part of the team in TVs The IT Crowd, the English actor, presenter, and comedian is immediately recognizable by the socially awkward character he's created. Ayoade's first role, however, was in a stage play he'd written for the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe Festival - Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight, for which he was nominated for a Perrier Award. Sharing the limelight with co-star Matthew Holness, the pair went on to write and star in several other Garth Merenghi shows, with the spoof horror-comedies gaining a cult following.

Ayoade's rise to stardom continued with a substantial portfolio of TV shows including The Crystal Maze, The Vicar of Dibley, and The Mandalorian. His film role call lists, among others,  The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, The Lego Movie, and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. It has even been rumored that Ayoade is in line to play the next Dr. Who.

Born in London in the spring of 1977, Ayoade's father, Layide Ade Laditi Ayoade, is of Nigerian descent, while his mother, Dagny Amalie, is Norwegian. The family left the busy city for the quieter life of the Suffolk town of Ipswich while he was still young, and his love for the silver screen became apparent in his teenage years, with Fellini and Woody Allen among his idols. 1995 saw Ayoade studying Law at Cambridge University where he joined the famous Footlights theatre group. Past members include Eric Idle, Clive Anderson, Stephen Fry, and Sue Perkins, and the majority have gone on to enjoy illustrious careers in the entertainment industry.
